Trent Edgerton had a dream - to provide the Twin Ports with an
outdoor movie series. In 2006, Trent made the
big commitment and bought a high quality inflatable outdoor
movie screen and high powered projector.
To make his dream come to life, Trent relied on the help of
family and friends, as well as a few adventurous local
businesses, to help pull together enough financing to support
the inaugural season. The City of Duluth Parks Department
suggested Leif Erikson Park as a prime location. The Parks
Department was thrilled at the idea of an outdoor movie series
and supported the project in any way they could.
THE DREAM
The magic of an outdoor movie is contagious and brings together
people from all walks of life. Outdoor movies are a universal
joy. The draw of the event is that is it free, its fun and its
outside! The goal is to provide a low-pressure, safe environment
to sit back and enjoy an evening under the stars.
“We wanted to create a fun family friendly event that ties in
the great outdoors and there isn’t a more perfect venue
than
LeifEriksonPark. Just bring your blanket,
we’ll provide the stars.”
-Trent
Edgerton,
owner of Twin Ports Outdoor Movies
“Visitors
ran the gamut…Edgerton and Seehus have ideas why the movies have
caught on like they have. ‘Well, they’re free,” Edgerton said.
“And there’s no pressure for the people here. They’re from all
walks of life.’… ‘It’s magic,’ Seehus said. The program is the
most successful ongoing use of the city parks since Music in the
Park Debuted in the 1970’s, he said. The Duluth Parks and
Recreation Department has donated the use of Leif Erikson Park,
and Edgerton is donating the use of the equipment-which was a
significant investment-as well as his time and expertise.”

“Movies in
the Park celebrates both the community and the natural beauty of
the Twin Ports. … [Penny Steward, from Oulu, WI states] ‘It’s an
activity [our family] can all do together. We pack a picnic
lunch and have a great time. We enjoy good quality movies with a
beautiful view.’ … Families with children of all ages, couples,
young and old, along with students, senior citizens and
community groups share the park for the weekly event. Even pets
are welcome, as long as they are leashed. ‘It’s a low-pressure,
free event that invites people from every walk of life,’
explains Trent. ‘Everyone should be there and there is no reason
not to get along.’ … ‘You really feel a sense a sense of
community at the park. You see just tons of people from all over
the city,’ says Terri Mathews. … ‘Just seeing everyone enjoy the
movies is the best part of organizing the event,’ says Trent.”

“Edgerton
said he doesn’t make any money on the Duluth Series, but that
doesn’t matter. ‘I would love to do it as long as I can,’ he
said. ‘If I won the lottery or something, I wouldn’t even need
to have sponsors to help pay for the film rights and the people
who help me. I just want everyone to get along, and to be safe
and comfortable. I’m hoping this will be our best year.’”
